Rauw Alejandro

Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017, and quickly became the number one streamed track in just 6 months. The single a mix of reggaeton and pop music not only brought renewed interest in reggaeton but also brought attention to Latin music in general. In 2015 there were only two mostly Spanish-language songs on Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017, however, 19 predominantly Spanish tracks made the top 100, and in 2020 there were 41 of them. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in the year 2017 the most well-known artists began to join forces with reggaeton artists. Drake and Bad Bunny collaborated on MIA (2018), while Madonna teamed up with Maluma on Medellin 2019, which was released in 2019. In the year 2020, a handful of reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at its inclination towards mainstream, but a new generation of performers, including Rauw Alejandro, aimed to keep reggaeton evolving. The incorporation of elements from electronic dance music and other styles was a common method.
